Flanagan Smith

www.myspace.com/flanagansmith

Michael Patrick Flanagan Smith is an practitioner of American traditional music. His work has led him to conversations and correspondence with Pete Seeger, Harold Leventhal and the Guthrie family, among others. Smith has shared the stage with Ramblin' Jack Elliott on several occasions. Jack, who Bob Dylan refers to as the King of the Folk Singers, told Smith he was "pretty good." He also confided in Smith that "It's hard to find a bugle in a pawn shop."

Smith spent many years in Baltimore where he often opened up for punk bands. His sets are divided between folk standards and original compositions. His self released album, "All the cars my friends stole," recorded live with a full band in Baltimore, is primarily about his family and the friends he grew up with in rural America.

A writer of short stories and plays, Smith is also an actor who has appeared on the New York stage as well as in several independent films. As a theatre director, he has mounted productions in Baltimore, DC, Los Angeles and New York. Recently, he directed his first short film, "Checkers" as well as a music video for Philly's Wes Matheu and the New Way Down."

MPFS grew up on a farm in Frederick County, Maryland and currently calls Brooklyn home.
